Hybrid connectivity and bandwidth economics
Select internet, VPN, Direct Connect, or combined connectivity from security, availability, lead-time, throughput, and cost constraints. Allocate one or multiple VPNs or Direct Connect capacities from sustained and burst demand with required redundancy.
LESSON GOALS
By the end, you can
- Select internet, VPN, Direct Connect, or combined connectivity from security, availability, lead-time, throughput, and cost constraints.
- Allocate one or multiple VPNs or Direct Connect capacities from sustained and burst demand with required redundancy.
01
Calculate Usable Hybrid Capacity
Hybrid link selection begins with a transfer equation. Measure sustained and peak bits per second in both directions, burst duration, required completion window, protocol overhead, encryption overhead, source and destination limits, and concurrent production traffic. Nominal circuit speed is not usable application throughput. Then state latency consistency, provisioning lead time, route convergence, encryption, and the failure scope that must survive. A one-gigabit link cannot be credited with one gigabit of useful payload continuously without evidence. For bulk movement, divide remaining bytes by remaining usable seconds and include change rate so the cutover backlog does not grow. For interactive traffic, assess p95 latency and jitter rather than only monthly bytes. Capacity plans should show normal utilization, one-path-failed utilization, and the point where a burst would queue or violate the transfer window. This arithmetic prevents a low fixed-price connection from winning despite insufficient capacity.
02
Select Vpn Direct Connect Or Internet
Public internet with application TLS can fit ordinary public connectivity when path variability is accepted. Site-to-Site VPN provides encrypted IPsec tunnels over the internet and is comparatively quick to provision, making it useful as an initial path, backup, or moderate-volume solution. Direct Connect provides dedicated connectivity with provider and cross-connect dependencies and can improve path consistency for sustained demand. Basic Direct Connect is not automatically encrypted and one connection is not redundant. Add supported MACsec, an IPsec overlay, or application TLS according to the security requirement, and use independent locations or paths when outage tolerance demands it. Compare DX port, provider, cross-connect, transfer, monitoring, and redundant capacity against VPN resources and internet-path behavior over the actual horizon. A rapidly needed twelve-week project may never recover DX lead time. A long-lived steady transfer may justify it. Preserve route policy and test failover; purchasing two logical tunnels that share the same underlying dependency does not satisfy independent-path intent.
03
Operate Failover And Cost Crossover
Monitor tunnel state, BGP routes, packet loss, latency, throughput, discarded traffic, and utilization by direction. Test failure during peak demand to prove the survivor carries required traffic without violating latency or encryption. A warm backup with insufficient capacity is not resilience. Document which prefixes prefer which path and how asymmetric routing affects stateful inspection. Cost crossover depends on monthly bytes and duration as well as fixed fees; recompute when data volume, provider rates, contract term, or traffic direction changes. During DX provisioning, redundant VPN can satisfy immediate encrypted connectivity, but remove temporary excess only after the new routes and failover are proven. Conversely, retain VPN as a diverse backup when the recovery requirement values it. If demand falls and path consistency becomes unimportant, internet or VPN may regain the advantage. If residency or local response becomes the deciding constraint, this network comparison hands off to a compute-placement decision rather than pretending a faster circuit solves data-governance semantics.
DECISION TABLE
Compare the architecture constraints
| requirement | choose | because | reject |
|---|---|---|---|
| fast encrypted start | VPN | quick encrypted path | DX lead time |
| sustained predictable private | DX | consistency/volume fit | internet |
| DX encryption | MACsec/IPsec/TLS | requirement met | assume dedicated=encrypted |
| redundancy | independent paths | failure survives | two tunnels same dependency |
GUIDED WORKED SCENARIO
Reason from the stated constraints
This is a guided example, not a question to memorise. The knowledge check uses new situations to test the same reasoning.
A plant transfers sustained 600 Mbps with 2-Gbps bursts, requires encryption and no single path, has 90-day DX lead time and a 12-month horizon.
Requirements
- 600 Mbps sustained
- 2 Gbps bursts
- Encryption
- Independent path
- Service starts now
Reasoning path
- For Hybrid connectivity and bandwidth economics, eliminate any candidate that violates the explicit security or failure/performance dimension.
- Quantify the scale, operating burden, and complete cost horizon specific to Hybrid connectivity and bandwidth economics before ranking valid choices.
- Select the lowest-total-cost valid design for Hybrid connectivity and bandwidth economics, then change one decisive constraint and re-evaluate the loser.
Why it wins
- Meets immediate lead time
- DX serves sustained demand
- Independent encrypted paths meet failure/security
Why the alternatives lose
Under-capacity/single path
Becomes correct when: Lower demand accepts one pathNot inherently encrypted/redundant
Becomes correct when: Security/redundancy not requiredConsistency/private requirements fail
Becomes correct when: Public TLS and variable path acceptedARCHITECTURE VISUAL · TEXT MODE

Answer one question at a time
Pass every question to complete this lesson. Each answer includes reasoning before you continue.
Demand fits redundant VPN paths and dedicated-path consistency is no longer required. What design can replace Direct Connect without losing path independence?
Reveal reasoning
Independent encrypted VPN paths replace Direct Connect because the lower demand and relaxed consistency requirement remove the dedicated-circuit advantage while redundancy remains.
A 2-Gbps circuit test delivers less application throughput, and a planner calls the provider out of contract. What should be measured first?
Reveal reasoning
Measure protocol overhead, packet size, encryption, intermediate bottlenecks, and end-to-end usable throughput; nominal port rate is not application throughput.
Before reveal, predict what happens when two VPN tunnels share the same customer router and that router fails.
Reveal reasoning
The independence gate fails despite two tunnel labels; place failover across genuinely independent devices and paths.
