LESSON GOALS
By the end, you can
- Explain and apply how to select query and visualization modes by freshness, latency, and concurrency.
- Compare direct/imported query and query-engine/BI layer under explicit security, resilience, performance, operations, and cost constraints.
01
Specify Serving Slo
Analytics serving starts with the audience and decision latency. Describe whether users explore freely, consume fixed executive metrics, or view embedded tenant analytics. Then set maximum source staleness, p95 visual response, concurrent viewers, row-level isolation, and the source workload budget. A visualization layer cannot repair a poorly partitioned lake, an overloaded operational database, or an ungoverned dataset. Athena is a suitable serving boundary for intermittent SQL over compressed, partitioned S3 data. Amazon Redshift is a columnar warehouse intended for analytical workloads and can support modeled datasets and sustained BI concurrency. An operational database should serve dashboards only when query shape and isolation leave enough headroom for its primary transaction role. Current AWS naming also matters: Amazon Quick Sight is the BI capability within Amazon Quick, while canonical blueprint strings remain unchanged in metadata. Keep this naming as a freshness-sensitive implementation fact, not as a reason to alter lesson mappings. The first architecture artifact should show source, transformation, serving engine, dataset, identity context, and dashboard separately so ownership and bottlenecks remain visible.
02
Choose Direct Query Or Spice
Direct query asks the underlying source on each interaction, so it wins when viewers require source-current results and that source can satisfy the concurrent latency target. Its apparent simplicity can hide repeated source scans, database connections, and contention with ETL or transactions. SPICE imports a dataset into the Quick in-memory engine. AWS documents the choice between SPICE and direct query; the extract can improve interactive response and reduce repeated source work, but its data is only as current as successful ingestion. Choose it when a bounded refresh delay is acceptable and offload or concurrency is valuable. Narrow the imported columns and rows, pre-aggregate expensive calculations, and schedule or incrementally refresh within the freshness budget. Regional SPICE capacity and refresh behavior are volatile and therefore need monitoring rather than a timeless numeric claim. Embedding changes presentation and identity integration, not the data pipeline. In either published or embedded use, carry tenant identity into row-level controls and validate that dataset authors cannot accidentally widen access. A successful refresh proves data movement, not per-viewer authorization.
03
Measure Viewer Path
Load testing should replay realistic filters, dashboard sheets, and tenant distributions instead of opening one author session. Capture source query duration and queueing for direct mode; for SPICE, capture ingestion duration, failures, capacity use, and refresh age. At the viewer edge, measure visual p50 and p95 latency, error rate, embedded-session demand, and the number of queries generated by each interaction. A dashboard with many small visuals may create more source pressure than one well-designed aggregate. Cost analysis includes warehouse or Athena work, extract ingestion, BI capacity or sessions under the current model, source replicas introduced for isolation, and engineering effort for duplicated datasets. Failure testing is equally important. Decide what users see when refresh is late, when the source is unavailable, or when a tenant entitlement changes between refreshes. Label the displayed data timestamp so bounded staleness is observable. If immediate freshness later becomes mandatory, direct query may become correct, but only after proving source capacity. If analyst exploration replaces embedded consumption, governed Athena access may be simpler. These reversal tests stop SPICE, direct query, and warehouse choices from becoming defaults detached from requirements.
DECISION TABLE
Compare the architecture constraints
| requirement | choose | because | reject |
|---|---|---|---|
| source-current data and source has headroom | direct query | freshness dominates and source can serve concurrency | SPICE refresh lag |
| interactive speed, source offload, bounded staleness | SPICE import | refresh target permits an extract | direct query fan-out |
| ad hoc SQL over curated S3 | Athena | serverless query-in-place fits | dashboard as query engine |
| sustained modeled BI concurrency | warehouse serving layer | workload isolation and concurrency dominate | operational database |
GUIDED WORKED SCENARIO
Reason from the stated constraints
This is a guided example, not a question to memorise. The knowledge check uses new situations to test the same reasoning.
A SaaS vendor embeds tenant dashboards for 3,000 concurrent viewers. Direct queries overload the warehouse; p95 visual latency is 9 seconds, but customers accept data up to 15 minutes old.
Requirements
- Tenant isolation is mandatory
- p95 visual latency target is 2 seconds
- Freshness may lag by 15 minutes
- The warehouse must retain capacity for transactions and ETL
Reasoning path
- For Analytics serving and visualization strategy, eliminate any candidate that violates the explicit security or failure/performance dimension.
- Quantify the scale, operating burden, and complete cost horizon specific to Analytics serving and visualization strategy before ranking valid choices.
- Select the lowest-total-cost valid design for Analytics serving and visualization strategy, then change one decisive constraint and re-evaluate the loser.
Why it wins
- SPICE offloads repeated viewer queries and improves interactive latency
- The accepted freshness window makes scheduled refresh valid
- Narrow datasets and tenant controls reduce both exposure and capacity
Why the alternatives lose
It violates source-capacity and latency constraints
Becomes correct when: The source can sustain peak concurrency and each view must be source-currentIt does not provide the required embedded governed dashboard experience
Becomes correct when: The audience is analysts performing ad hoc SQL on governed S3 dataIt multiplies operations and storage without a stated isolation need that existing controls cannot meet
Becomes correct when: Regulation requires physically separate stores and accepts the operational burdenARCHITECTURE VISUAL · TEXT MODE
Inspect the model
For Analytics serving and visualization strategy, read a keyboard-ordered table of requirements, quantities, candidate path or service, first failed constraint, repair, winner, and changed-constraint result; animation and color are unnecessary.

Answer one question at a time
Pass every question to complete this lesson. Each answer includes reasoning before you continue.
The product changes to zero-lag displays after load tests prove the warehouse can serve all viewers. Which mode now wins?
Reveal reasoning
Direct query replaces SPICE because zero refresh lag is now mandatory and the source has measured concurrency headroom.
A dashboard refresh succeeds, but one tenant can see another tenant’s rows. What failed despite healthy SPICE ingestion?
Reveal reasoning
Viewer row-level authorization failed; dataset refresh health and per-viewer tenant isolation are independent controls.
Before reveal, predict the bottleneck when 3,000 viewers fan out direct queries to the already overloaded warehouse.
Reveal reasoning
The serving/source-concurrency stage fails, visible as rising warehouse queueing and nine-second dashboard p95; importing to SPICE offloads it.
