LESSON GOALS
By the end, you can
- Explain and apply how to select batch, stream, online transfer, gateway, or partner protocol.
- Compare Kinesis/SQS and DataSync/Gateway/Transfer Family under explicit security, resilience, performance, operations, and cost constraints.
01
Measure Ingestion Contract
Measure an ingestion design in two coordinate systems: records per second and bytes per second. Record count exposes API and partition pressure, while byte rate exposes transport and storage pressure. Preserve the burst duration as well as its peak, because a ten-second spike can be absorbed differently from a two-hour surge. State whether ordering applies globally, per device, or not at all; broad ordering narrows partitioning choices. Also state how long a consumer may fall behind and still replay. For file intake, label the relationship as a single migration, a repeated synchronization, a permanent mounted interface, or an external protocol endpoint. These labels prevent a transfer utility from being mistaken for a filesystem. Security is another independent axis: producer identity, encryption keys, endpoint exposure, and destination policy each need an owner. A private route proves reachability only; it does not prove that a producer may write. Finally, calculate the physical transfer window from usable rather than advertised bandwidth and reserve room for retries, verification, and concurrent source activity. This requirements sheet determines which mechanisms remain eligible before operational preference enters the decision.
02
Separate Stream Delivery And Transfer
Kinesis Data Streams retains records for programmable consumers and supports replay with ordering scoped by partition key. A useful key spreads traffic while keeping records that must be ordered together; an overloaded key is a data-distribution defect, not evidence that every consumer needs more capacity. Data Firehose instead manages buffering and delivery to supported destinations. It is attractive when the destination contract matters more than custom replay logic. Amazon MSK belongs in the candidate set when Kafka protocol or ecosystem compatibility is mandatory, not simply whenever events arrive continuously. SQS represents work ownership: one queue normally distributes tasks among workers, so it is not a substitute for a retained analytical history consumed independently. For file movement, DataSync addresses online copying and repeated synchronization, Storage Gateway maintains a hybrid file or volume interface, and Transfer Family exposes managed partner protocols. Snowball Edge must be qualified at the claim site: AWS documents that it is not available to new customers. Existing eligible customers can still evaluate it, while a new customer should match DataSync, Data Transfer Terminal, a partner solution, or Outposts to online transfer, physical transfer, logistics, or continuing edge-compute semantics respectively.
03
Operate Two Independent Pipelines
Operate telemetry and bulk transfer as separate capacity plans even when they share a destination. For a stream, watch incoming records and bytes, throttled writes, partition imbalance, consumer lag, retention headroom, and failed delivery. Capacity recovery must include the rate at which a delayed consumer catches up; merely matching current production leaves backlog permanent. Producer batching can reduce call overhead, but the batch must remain below the accepted latency and record-size envelope. For a migration, observe source read speed, network utilization, destination writes, verification failures, and the remaining bytes divided by remaining time. Parallel tasks help only until the source filesystem, network, or destination becomes the bottleneck. Cost comparison includes stream capacity mode, retention, enhanced consumption where used, delivery processing, agent or endpoint runtime, transfer legs, and idle resources after completion. Keep separate IAM roles for producers, movers, and consumers, and test KMS and resource policies with the exact principal. An operational runbook should define what happens when partition skew appears, when a destination slows, when a transfer misses its checkpoint, and when credentials are revoked. Those responses reveal whether the architecture can meet the declared replay and deadline guarantees.

GUIDED WORKED SCENARIO
Reason from the stated constraints
This is a guided example, not a question to memorise. The knowledge check uses new situations to test the same reasoning.
A manufacturer emits 20,000 2-KiB telemetry events/s with 6-hour replay for three consumers and must also move 80 TiB of existing files over a private 2-Gbps link within six days.
Requirements
- Per-device ordering and replay are mandatory
- Three independent consumers need the same records
- Existing files require encrypted recurring transfer with verification
- Operations staff cannot maintain Kafka
Reasoning path
- For Ingestion frequency, streaming, transfer, and secure entry, eliminate any candidate that violates the explicit security or failure/performance dimension.
- Quantify the scale, operating burden, and complete cost horizon specific to Ingestion frequency, streaming, transfer, and secure entry before ranking valid choices.
- Select the lowest-total-cost valid design for Ingestion frequency, streaming, transfer, and secure entry, then change one decisive constraint and re-evaluate the loser.
Why it wins
- Kinesis preserves replay and independent consumer semantics
- DataSync matches accelerated file movement and can validate transfers
- Separate IAM roles, encryption, and endpoints keep ingest paths least-privileged
Why the alternatives lose
Buffering/delivery does not provide the required programmable replay consumers
Becomes correct when: The only requirement is managed delivery to a supported destination and buffering latency is acceptableWorkers delete messages and the queue is not the retained multi-consumer stream required
Becomes correct when: The workload is independent tasks where each message should be processed by one workerIt is unavailable to new customers
Becomes correct when: The organization is an existing eligible customer and offline transfer is explicitly approvedARCHITECTURE VISUAL · TEXT MODE
Inspect the model
For Ingestion frequency, streaming, transfer, and secure entry, read a keyboard-ordered table of requirements, quantities, candidate path or service, first failed constraint, repair, winner, and changed-constraint result; animation and color are unnecessary.

Answer one question at a time
Pass every question to complete this lesson. Each answer includes reasoning before you continue.
The telemetry consumers are removed and only buffered delivery to S3 remains. What service replaces the retained stream, and why?
Reveal reasoning
Data Firehose replaces Kinesis for telemetry because managed delivery now wins and retained programmable replay is no longer required.
A teammate proposes increasing Kinesis capacity to cure one device key that remains hot. What observation disproves the proposal?
Reveal reasoning
A single key still concentrates records on one partition; redesign or shard the key rather than buying unrelated aggregate capacity.
Before reveal in the event-flow lab, predict what happens when one device key exceeds its shard while total stream capacity remains available.
Reveal reasoning
The per-key/shard gate fails first; lag and throttling concentrate on that shard, and redistributing the partition key is the repair.
